My uncleused to be in the RAF, and at one time was posted to SHAPE in Belgium.
I was visiting once and we went around Mons, the closest town. I have a picture which shows my car parked by the memorial marking the point where the front line was on the first day of the war, and 100m up the road, I'm standing next to another memorial, which shows where the front line was at the end of the war. 4 years and it hardly moved.
And how many men died there? I hate to think.
But TGB's right. The idea of dying for your country is not one I care to think about nowadays.
