Most sentencestend to run concurrently rather than consecutively. A Judge does have the discretion to make them consecutive sentences, but clearly s/he didn't choose to in this case. I think it's on a technicality that the two deaths form part of the same crime/act. He will be out after serving less than half the sentence as he pled guilty.
