Wrong war chickenlady - that was American GI soldiers in WWIII think Gloria is referring to the incident in 1915 when German and British troops exchanged gifts, sang hymns and played football in no mans land.
It was the subject of a particularly piss poor christmassy song around 1980. I don't know who did it, I can only assume they died.
Now Ms chickenlady, about those silk stockings...
