You can hide it behind an htaccess file where you manually hardcode the users and their passwords, or you can have a db of users with login and members pages generated on the server served if the user is logged in.
You'll need registration code and forgotten password code. You'll need to store these details somewhere.
It's not rocket science, but if you're hiding behind the sofa after reading the above then I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself. Well, unless it's you doing it for yourself for fun and learning, in which case it's a good exercise.
