I found the second year away to be the hardest one.The first one is full of new stuff and joy at independence. The third one is tinged with the knowledge that'll it'll all soon be over. So the second one can feel a bit run-of-the-mill: the 'fun' of poverty has worn off, the fact that all the work counts now has set in.
It does get better - when I subsequently moved 6000 miles away, I was fine!
