*geek mode hijack alart*The rear suspension is attached using two linkages, which means the swingarm moves diagonally backwards and up. The chain tension when you pedal ensures the back end is kept in check and any power sappage is kept to a minimum. The shock is valved to cancel out low frequency bobbing motions too. Hit the pedals hard and it accelerates like a hardtail.
