alzheimer's disease
is the worst thing I've ever seen. lived with a man in college whose mother developed it and we took care of her until pretty much the end. she was a beautiful and tough woman who'd spit in the faces of the Nazis when they occupied Belgium. reduced to a creature so afraid she couldn't open her eyes, just laid on her bed pretending to be asleep. she had no understanding of the world left.

fuck if it doesn't still make me cry. RIP Martha. clearly it's time for a long walk.
