Thanks for that!ssh -X did the trick. I'd just got used to using export DISPLAY due to some funny set-up I've got at work where I'm ssh-ing in from Windows to the same Red Hat machine. But of course for that I've got to run an X server program alongside the SSH client, so that never cropped up as an issue before...
