while I tried to take the balanced view before and thought it might just be because it's difficult for him to I now hold up my hands and admit I was wrong.

He's shown his true colours, and you need to acknowledge that you are better off without him, and whatever you do, don't let this spoil your time at uni.

Without wanting to put an extra dampner on things, it seems that if he is acting like this now then he might try and bugger with some new relationships (friends or more) when you get to uni. Something to look out for.

Edit: Halfy is right. Maturity won't arrive for him for a good number of years yet.
