*CONTROVERSY ALERT*Re your colleagues' second comment: there are places where this is actually true.
A friend of mine teaches at a primary school in Whitechapel - only two of her pupils speak English as their primary language. The mental thing about this is that OFSTED inspections do not take this into account when assessing the learning progress of pupils.
