I do like the phrase "committing to a pet" though, like its some sort of ceremony.

I caught the last 20 minutes of Flash Gordon yesterday, and I had to wonder why Ming the Merciless, ruler of the entire universe and presumably wielder of supreme executive power, chose to incorporate bits of the Church of England marriage ceremony into his intergalactic shotgun wedding, i.e. "With this ring I thee wed"...

... although I may have been delirious from lack of Easter eggs.
