Right then
Not just financial improvements, but here's how I think the country could be improved (may contain elements of facetiousness)

1 - Slash the number of students going to university, such that only academic types go there, and the rest go and find useful jobs in the trades and so on.

2 - Clamp down on those bloody 'compensation for falling over in the street' insurance companies, which would then reduce premiums for the ordinary mortal, giving us more money and thus increasing consumer spending.

3 - Tax obese people heavily so they can't afford so much food.

4 - Make the driving test much harder, and have compulsory retests every five years to get the fuckwits* off the roads and make life better for the rest of the population. Removal of enough of the said fuckwits will reduce carbon dioxide emissions too, if you worry about that sort of thing. Oh and you can have more public transport too.

*People who drive excessively fast or slowly for the conditions, who overtake on blind bends/humps, people who wear hats when driving, drivers of cars with boy-racer add ons (lowered suspension, ridiculous alloys and aftermarket blacked out windows for example) and anyone who thinks driving a Nissan Micra is a good idea, to name but a few.
