I work in scienceand I wouldn't be able to do what I do without a degree. It used to be that you could (and with a decent background knowledge and training, there's no reason why not) but science is very qualification-heavy yet relatively poorly paid. If I ever want to earn above £25k then I'll have to do a PhD and I'm truly not sure I'm cut out for it.
*sigh* still, it's what I want to do, so I'd be doing it regardless of pay and qualifications.
I think being a Champion of Poorly Fluffehs is more important than a fat paycheque, myself, so good for you :)
