I'm doing a PhDand it's crap.
On the surface, it sounds really exciting - I work with an instrument that gets mounted in a plane, and I get to go flying with it to take measurements, the end result of which may have an impact on climate change predictions.
But I hate it. It's not the PhD I wanted to do and the instrument is unreliable to the point of being depressing.
I'm acutely aware that moaning about it in this fashion makes me look deeply ungrateful for my lot, but I have at least decided that, even if I don't enjoy it, I may as well finish it, having got this far.
When I was younger, I wanted dearly to be a palaeontologist and dig up dinosaurs. Nowadays I'm increasingly tempted to try and wangle my way into one of the labs that does behavioural studies on crows. Or just try and find a band tipped for fame and fortune and offer my services as a bassist the day after theirs "mysteriously" has a fatal accident.
