you deduct the value of the cheque you just wrote from the balance of the account...
on the page inside the front/back cover of the chequebook, thus keeping a real-time running total for the account. so when your bank statement arrives you can mutter WTF cos cheques you wrote 5 days ago haven't yet registered with the bank but you have already accounted for it yourself, leaving a discrepancy and sometimes much confusion and hilarity!
