That both sucks and blows.

What the other guys said - get your CV prepared and registered with agencies that recruit for your area of work, own the phone and always offer to call them back rather than waiting for them to call and you make sure you keep in regular contact with any people you speak to.

Additionally, contact all other companies who might be able to help you - but do it directly. In these challenging times there are far fewer job advertisments, if you can demonstrate to a company that you are pro-active enough to want to contact them about working for them, this will go a long way toward helping with that.
