Try some Charles PortisHis most famous book is True Grit - which subsequently got cowboy-Hollywood-ised featuring John "KKK" Wayne.
Don't let that put you off. True Grit is a fantastic book.
I'm re-reading "Dog of the South" for probably the fifth time and it's still fresh and very funny and wry.
