veryfortunately the new hinges were exactly the same size as the old ones, and the door hadn't suffered for being off for almost 2 years, and having had about 10 layers of paint removed.

The factthat the door had all that paint removed would have increased the available tolerance in fitting it to the frame, thus offsetting any minor warping etc.
