I went to the beachand watched a man dig a few small holes with a little digger, while I took photos and stuck my measuring tape in them.
not quite as exciting as your day, holewise, but it was at the beach, which was a bonus.
took much less time than I expected too, so I blatantly should have taken my surfboard :-/
