The responses were par for the course on this boardand I've seen much worse. Your response was to get defensive and point out other people's perceived deficiencies instead of rolling with the punches and maybe taking the piss back a bit, which would have instantly gained you some respect. People wouldn't have taken the piss any less, but I hope you know what I mean.
