I'm sorry but,the references to goatee beards in this thread have me looking around for a leg up to help me get on my high horse. The term seems to be applied to hair which covers the chin but not doesn't extend up the jawline.
Now here's a picture of a goat.
It doesn't just have fur in the area described, it has it all over its face, around its eyes and everything. That is not its beard.
Its beard is the bit that hangs down below its chin. And to my mind it is only beards of that nature, as worn by French beatniks (and more acely by The Stranglers circa "Duchess"), that are worthy of the name.
