I bought my first car off eBayfor about a grand. My sister b3th picked it up for me and her fiancé replaced some part on the engine that needed fixing. To be honest it was near death's door but I got a good 6 months or so out of the car and I learned to drive in it which was ace.
A 1998 Mazda 323F ZXi with a 2L V6 engine. I loved its growly face and sadly took it to the scrap heap when it was beyond repair.
Don't recommend going that route for a first car though
