it's one of Murakami's earlier books, and though I love all his work, it wasn't quite on the scale of his greatest

I would recommend
a different one of his to start with. For a shorter one try 'Dance, Dance, Dance' or for his best try 'Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World'

I once went on holiday for a week
(as a youngster) expecting a week of activities. It pissed down all week, so I ended up reading the same two books seven times each.
