Research into vitamin C and the common cold
which was done a couple of years back, concluded that even high doses don't help to fight the virus nor relieve the symptoms. Taking a regular intake of the vitamin doesn't even decrease the frequency of contracting the cold.

However, it has been shown that it is likely to reduce the severity of the illness, once contracted.

I'd provide a reference, but I can't remember where I read it, and can't be arsed to look it up.

this sounds like a scotsman finding an excuse for avoiding fruit.

I'm eating an apple as I write
So it's not an excuse.

Although I wish I didn't splash apple juice all over my laptop screen every time I bite.

That's not juice, it's batter.

No, actually
It's just the lard squirting out of the batter.

"However it has also been shown
that eating deep-fried confectionary can help defend against cancer"

This is true
Because you'll likely die of some cardiac-related problem before you develop cancer.

Scottish pragmatism
right here.

The severity of the illness thing
tends to fit into the medical trial category of "massively dubious arse" though.

Anything that relies on the opinion of the person in the trial, by asking them, is really meaningless data from a medical point of view.
