update
second house was quite nice, sound people of a similar age to me, much cheaper than the first and handy for town.

however, no pool...

I'd also been planning to get some work towards my chartership done while up here and am unsure whether that would happen if I were at the second place. A difficult decision, but I'm not sure whether that is just because the first place is much more expensive. Even though I'm not paying it still gives me pause...

I was gonna say.
If work are going to pick up the tab for this, then go where you'll be most comfortable. If you are only there 3 days a week, how much of a social life are you expecting?

that's my view.
I'm not after new friends. I've got plenty of those back home, not to mention on here.

I think I'm going to go back and see the first place again tomorrow night to refresh my memory (it was so big I couldn't take it all in) and make my final decision then.
