A girl I went to school with left a tampon in for three days.
There's no happy ending. She didn't overcome it. She spent a few fairly horrific days in hospital with her horrified parents and then died. She was nineteen.

Difficult to tell.
She died more than twenty years ago and spent the last few days in incoherent agony or monged out on morphine so nobody really got a chance to ask.

Perhaps she was a fucking idiot. Perhaps she forgot. There's only one thing for certain: she dead.
