This is a question Pet Peeves

What makes you angry? Get it off your chest so we can laugh at your impotent rage.

Foreign Language Speakers
This is something that really gets on my nerves.

I live with a French girl, fair enough, no problems there, but whenever one of her French friends come over or we go out to a bar, that is all they will speak, completely excluding me from the conversation.

It's even worse when it's in my own home. For instance, a few came over for a meal and that's all they spoke, while I'm just sat there unable to participate and confused by what they're laughing at.

I recently went to a party with her, but left after 30 mins as it was exactly the same sort of thing.

Strangely, I also used to live with a Swedish girl, and she never once did that..herself and her friends would always speak English so that I could be involved.

It's a matter of courtesy.

I know the feeling..
Although I have less of an excuse. When I moved to Norway I hardly spoke a word and some people would deliberately use language to exclude me. Most however would be nice and switch to english. Of course now that I'm understanding them they switch to obscure dialects to exclude me instead.. Does this rigmarole ever end??

Of course because I'm the foreigner I feel I can't really complain about it :(

why not?
i can be really stressful living in a foreign language environment, and any opportunity to let the brain relax and speak it's native tongue can really be a godsend. :) i've been close to tears with relief when hooking up with a native english speaker during longer stays in japan.

It's
a matter of survival, not courtesy, if you're drinking with me. Speak English or you'll be wearing that pool table.

Cheers

because
I'm way too nice and know that when I arrived I was shockingly shy about trying a second language and feel I would be a moronic hypocrite to force others to speak their second languages because I was too shy to try with mine :p
