I sympathise.
When I was a very small child, my mum decided I should be interested in history, because she was when she was at school. So periodically she would waste pounds and pounds of her own money on buying series of history books so I had hundreds of pages of dusty information about the Egyptians, the Romans, the Tudors, the Stuarts, the Middle Ages and every other period of history. This just served to make me annoyed.

Then later on when it was decided I have a "flair for languages" suddenly my entire family started buying me French books, and asking me to "say something in French" every time I saw them. Again, angry mini-Maladicta. Kids should just be allowed to make up their own minds about it, and parents should keep their ideas to themselves unless actually consulted!
