tills
Its the same here in France. older shops have half a dozen tills, with 3 open at the most. Newer shops have loads of tills, generally with 3 open at the most.
If you read back to the Shoplifting question of the week, I was once so peeved with the queue I walked out the shop with my trolley of unpaid goods through the gaps between empty checkouts where the barrier hadnt been shut.
