I think that the answer
is that most people are spectacularly stupid. Remember, in order to post on B3ta, you need to:

a) turn the computer on without electrocuting yourself
b) remember both a username and a password

which combined are beyond the intelligence of most of the gormless automatons that clutter up the pavement these days.
