Ah, both letting others off and getting on can be done at the same time
The Side-step Slide. When people are getting off and a group is just standing there, maybe at the sides, it can actually cause more congestion as there results in a walkway of width of about one person being formed (on the tube, especially); so the aim is that those at the front of the rabble turn side on and sort of... rotate into the train, freeing up room on the platform and with no great hindrance to the people getting off (less hindrance in fact, if platform congestion is especially bad); it also helps if those passengers disembarking also do the side-step slide.

You can always tell a tourist 'cos they just stand there... right in front of the bloody door.
