"David Bowie may as well have invented punk"
That's given me the biggest laugh I've had in ages! What complete drivel!
The only possible reasons I can think of for you saying that are that various Pistols etc have said they liked Bowie, and the 'silly hair dye' aspect of commercial punk may have subconsciously come from DB's silly dyed hair.
Musically you're MILES off course. The MC5 and the Stooges - as well as the 60s punk rock from which the name actually comes (the real roots of punk) do not sound one single bit like the weedy, girly soft rock of Bowie. He started out as a third-rate Syd Barrett parodist ('The Laughing Gnome?' - God help us), sapped all the 'punk' out of Iggy Pop and then ended up churning out pissy white soul.
Bowie has never been an innovator in music - fashion, I'll grant you - and the idea of him 'inventing punk' is laughable: he was about 10 when it kicked off in the US....
