I've often wondered what the point of house alarms was, when all your neighbours ignore it going off.

probably scare off opportunists/first-timers
Experienced house-breakers will either clock the alarm & look elsewhere, or (if they know it's worth it) disable it.

We didnt ignore it, we called the police. It took them several days to start asking around though.
