This is a question Prejudice

"Are you prejudiced?" asks StapMyVitals. Have you been a victim of prejudice? Are you a columnist for a popular daily newspaper? Don't bang on about how you never judge people on first impressions - no-one will believe you.

Quite so.
If they don't wish to be seen as thick, they should learn to speak properly.

Precisely!
Intelligent people, who want to be recognised as such, should be aware that the way you speak is a prime factor in how you're judged.

It's difficult to take someone seriously when they're speaking Chav. Even if what they're saying is pure gold - the fact that it's peppered with "innit"s will detract from the point.

or redneck
I saw some footage of a very bright university chap giving a lecture, in his native Alabama drawl. Things like that bring your innate dialectical prejudices right out and slap you around the face with them.
It's silly, really, thinking you can assess someone's intelligence by their dialect.

Maybe that's the point?

I can't help but think that it would be a very intelligent thing to do, to not immediately reveal your intelligence.
