This is a question Prejudice

"Are you prejudiced?" asks StapMyVitals. Have you been a victim of prejudice? Are you a columnist for a popular daily newspaper? Don't bang on about how you never judge people on first impressions - no-one will believe you.

Oh dear...
I'm a vegetarian. There, I've said it.

However, I like to think I'm a 'good' vegetarian. I don't eat fish, gelatine or anything like that, so I'm not a hypocrite - and more importantly, I'm not preachy about it. Most people don't even know I'm vegetarian until I have to tell them (usually if they're offering me meat). One of my best friends is a chef, and he only found out I was veggie a couple of months ago (I've been veggie for ten years). I genuinely couldn't give less of a fuck what other people are eating, I'm happy to buy Mr. Anodyne meat, and if I could cook for shit, I'd cook it for him. I just don't want to eat it myself. I could be the only vegetarian on the planet, and it wouldn't bother me. However, what does bother me, is when people start having a go at me for it. You know the kind - "We're not SUPPOSED to be vegetarian, it's not NATURAL." Well, it's not natural to sit on your arse all day eating pies and drinking beer, but it's not stopping you is it? People try using all kinds of arguments in their misguided attempts to get me to see the light and stop my silly ways, but their fatal error is forgetting that I don't give a shit. It's not like I'm wandering around chewing carrot sticks either, pretty much all I eat is based on potatoes, bread or pasta. I hardly ever eat vegetables, so it's not like I'm a tofu munching fart monster either. I would just feel too guilty to eat animal flesh, but that's a personal choice, and I don't want to impinge it upon anyone, and I wish people would stop believing that I do. If I go for a meal at a friend's house, I'm perfectly happy to just eat the veg they're making and skip the meat. I don't want them to make me anything special.

So stop saying that I do. You twats.

I'm with you there
I to am veggie, but I don't give half a fuck what anyone else eats or does. Chew the face of kittens if you like I don't care.
I hate saying I'm veggie because I can't stand the questions, especially the fucking stupid ones like 'if you were stranded on a desert island and there was nothing there but rabbits what would you do?' Well I'd eat the rabbits. I'm not stupid. But that's not going to happen for the moment so I'll pass thanks.

What I really hate is that everyone seems to feel they have a right to comment on your own personal life choices. I never tell anyone else what to eat, so don't tell me.

Oh and for the 'when a veggie comes for dinner you make them a special dinner but they don't cook you meat when you go to them' discussion comes up; ok fair point, but I've not cooked meat in 15 years. I can make you a cracking veggie dinner or a rubbish meat dinner that may or may not taste shit because I won't have tasted it as I went along.

So even veggies can make anti-veggie comments?
Can someone explain what is it with the calling veggies smelly, saying we have excessive wind, bowel trouble, blah blah, etc.? Been hearing this nonsense all my life. Primary school level humour, but so persistent among otherwise reasonable adults?

*sigh*
I'm not a vegetarian, but I usually avoid meat whenever possible. I just don't like it! I don't think it tastes good, I don't like the texture, it just disgusts me and makes my stomach hurt when I eat too much of it. However, whenever I order a veggie burger instead of a real one, anyone around me starts bombarding me with accusations and questions about my choice of food. My boyfriend hates it because it makes him feel guilty about eating meat. Honestly, that's not my intention! I don't care what other people eat, so why can't they just leave me alone?

I wish all vegetarians were like you.
Live and let live.

What I can't stand are the militant, "meat is murder" vegetarians.

You, on the other hand, simply choose not to eat meat in the same way that I choose not to drink alcohol (most of the time). Personal taste.

Good for you
I have no problem with the varying degrees of dietary differences people seem to have nowadays since it's probably healthier to have a mix of vegetarians, vegans and omnivores when you think about it.

What really tweaks my nipples is the (admittedly few) vegetarians/vegans I have met who constantly complain about how they are always lethargic, have some form of diet-related deficiency, or just whine about how hard it is to keep up such a pious no-meat lifestyle.

I understand their choice (note: choice) but I really don't care about how hard their life is as a result. Quite frankly, I'd wager they're probably doing it wrong since plenty of vegetarians manage to live quite healthy, un-obnoxious, lives.

Exactly
I always remember that it is my choice and my problem.
If there is only one veggie option on a menu then that is fine by me. I chose to be fucking awkward.

Carnivores
Some meaties seem to really take it personally that you're vegetarian... What's with that? I always just say that I don't like meat. Some people seem to get a bit weird about it, though - like somehow they find it slightly threatening and have to make some kind of stereotype joke about it or say something along the lines of being incapable of living without meat. Vegetarianism isn't infectious, as far as I know.
