I rather believe you might be swimming against the tide.
As much as it might not be right, it's the way language changes. You could equally claim the rest of the world wants its synonym for 'happy' back.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
If it helps, I don't think too many people who use the word 'gay' as an expletive or pejorative in a gaming environment are using it with a conscious association to homosexuality.
