Because the same sentimentsthat mean we don't bother with hysteria that doesn't really change very much has also preserved us from extreme views. We're one of the only countries in Europe that hasn't had a communist/facist government in the past century, and we're also one of the most irreligious.
I think that's a good enough benefit, for a bit of trauma in returning an item that doesn't fit.
