Racist grandparents
It Came From Planet Aylia says: "My husband's mad Auntie Joan accused the man seven doors down of stealing her milk as he was the first black neighbour she had. She doesn't even get her milk delivered." Tell us about casual racism from oldies.
Thanks to Brayn Dedd who suggested this too

Do gingers get to play the racism card too?
or is that just another whole round of offensiveness on it's own?
If so, why do gingers get special treatment?
If not, why do you oppress the gingers?
I need clarification on this issue, because I'm pretty sure I could write a plausible story about the shameful prejudice shown towards the rusties. With some morally-corrupt old people thrown in to serve as dartboards, I reckon I could shoe-horn it into this Qotw.
But I really need clarification before I can be arsed.

Given that 'race' is an entirely made-up, 'scientific' concept to justify the dying calls to retain slavery...
and to grave rob throughout the world, I think you could pretty much throw anything into the pot. Shit, the basis of 'race' definitions means that you could pretty much throw in any genetic characteristic pertaining to a group and then stereotype them with 'science'. So yes, rangas are part of that, but I think the correct usage would be bigotry - white on white racism dressed up - because racism is historically viewed down one lens of white against black.

I would say
that 'race' and 'racism' refer to external groups, and gingerism is an internal bigotry if you will, applied to random members of the populace rather than a (fairly) (okay, vaguely) well-defined group of outsiders. So gingerism isn't racism any more than homophobia is...oh, and it isn't anywhere near as widespread and vicious, either. And being ginger is optional. No, they don't get to play the racism card, even once you take out the fuzzy notion of what a race is in the first place.

Oh dear...
"And being ginger is optional."
Suggest to a black guy that he should bleach his skin to avoid idiots treating him differently and see where that gets you.

Why?
Dying your hair is a shitload easier, quicker, more common - one might even say standard practice for many - and reversibler. I'm not sure I see the comparison. Also, I'm not saying anyone *has* to dye their hair - just that they *do*. Y'know...because it's such a trivially easy thing to do.

I disagree
Anti-Ginge feeling goes back to the celts being belittled and a bit dehumanised by whatever new invaders had shoved them a bit further and further to the far edges of the British Isles. It was aimed squarely at a specific group and I've always felt uneasy about it as a result cos...well, who wants to side with the overdogs?
I'm here all week, try the Grecian 2000.
