Go and see local musicians for free in pubsit's much more rewarding and you'll be amazed at what you come across. I've seen Ben Howard loads of times for free before he got well known, for example. I've seen a goodly number of fantastic acts you'll have never heard of too!
There's some crap out there of course, but you'll soon figure out where the good venues are.
PS I live in a small village in Cornwall and there's plenty on round here.
