Sexism
Freddie Woo tells us: Despite being a well rounded modern man I think women are best off getting married and having a few kids else they'll be absolutely miserable come middle age.

the hitting thing is a little more complicated than you've made out.
the reasons for it are two fold, one it comes from the previous long held belief that it was ok for men to chastise their wives physically in the same way they'd chastise their kids (which we've also gotten beyond), and thus also the idea that women should be treated like children.
the other is more simply about not beating up someone you know is weaker than you are, and women are, generally, not as physically stong as men. its not really "equality" to say it should be ok for someone to hit a person they know cannot fight back with equal force.
