chef != cookA chef is a trained cook, a "Chef" chef - the "Chef de Cuisine", rather than a Sous Chef (de cuisine) or under chef, chef de pastis etc, doesn't generally cook anything and is in charge of the kitchen. Sweet FA to do with gender.

^^ Thisand specifically "Chef" in French kind of equates to "Boss" in English.
If it's a woman running a professional kitchen she'd still be "Chef" or "Boss" to her team.
"Chef" is also what you call the conductor in an orchestra, if that helps..
