Ah, but you haven't done a fair test.
For some reason (I know not the science), farts which bubble through water tend to smell worse than they otherwise would.
So, it might not be that you concentrated it that made it terrible... it might be some chemical transition that occurred before it even reached your nose.

...when your fart breaks the surface it is still at full concentration and it's half the usual distance from your nose.
