Personally, I've never ever smoked a cigarette. Lung damage from pneumonia put me off.

My wife's parentsMy wife's parents both smoke lots, have ever since she was born. So, like you, she has terrible asthma. She is on two different types of inhalers, and can't go to high elevations without having major breathing problems. What a wonderful thing for someone to do to their child.
