Personally, I've never ever smoked a cigarette. Lung damage from pneumonia put me off.

^This is wrong^It started in China: there were two blokes sat having a beer, when a large field of dry wild tobacco caught fire up the road. One bloke said 'that smells nice, lets pop down the shops and buy a packet of fags', and the rest is history.
