it's not the users, its the mediaOnce upon a time there was things like IRC and USENET, which pretty much were "join a group and chat or exchange info". Now with blogs/twitter/faceboot its not about the group but the ego - my blog, my tweeting, my page. So the design nudges the participant more towards an egocentric posture, hence trying to be cool (perhaps by being studiously anti-cool).
Not that group-centric media do not have ego-based posturing (see e.g. b3ta), but the design doesn't have that bias towards it.
