They had bugaboos about drugs and homosexualityThey asked a lot about drug use. Specifically, how many times had I ever smoked pot? EXACTLY how many times had I ever smoked pot? I did some calculations and came up with 24 times. Ever? EVER!
About a year later, before the review process had even really started, some unknown person called up at 6 a.m. and shouted peremptorily over the phone: "How many times have you EVER smoked pot?" "Twenty-four," I replied sleepily, and hung up.
Initial review took about two years. By that time, though, and before the serious vetting was to start, I had moved on.
