Ah, now seems like a good time to ask a question that has been bugging me for some time, in films and cartoons when you see a volcano, if you looked down into one would you actually see the lava?

It would depend on whether it was erupting or not. Most of the time, you're not going to see a boiling lake of lava so much as some steam and soil.

Your view of lava would probably be blocked by the ash cloud.
But I think you can with Hawai'ian-type volcanoes that just fart frequently instead of exploding rarely.
