I'm professionally obliged to be suspicious of sociologists.
Describing what people think and do strikes me as less interesting than puzzles about what they ought to think or do, or scientific puzzles about the structure of the world.

Plus, sociology frequently - not always, but frequently - descends either into activism (which is an undignified for an academic pursuit) or flaky relativism (which is also somewhat suspect).

EDIT: Just for the sake of clarity: I'm all for people going to university, and for education as an end in itself; to that extent, I do wish you all the best. It's merely that I'm allergic to sociology.
