lets just say its an "office" favourite ;)
well I've been refusing to upgrade for a while now (still using the 2003 edition - I like my menus how they are thanks), so I can't speak for newer things. But no auto detect as far as I'm aware. Maybe it was just my copy - it has been known switch to French without warning!

The later ones use "automatic"
Which means it just wings it until it can guess what version of english you're typing in.
Far more difficult than consulting your registrys locale settings.
