This is a question Amazing displays of ignorance

Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic tells us: "My dad's friend told us there's no such thing as gravity - it's just the weight of air holding us down". Tell us of times you've been floored by abject stupidity. "Whenever I read the Daily Express" is not a valid answer.

Ignorance of celebrity
is something I wholeheartedly approve of.

My dad just cheered me right up a few minutes ago whilst watching a documentary about Judas Priest on TV.

"Listen to his voice. He sounds just like Jamie Lee Curtis" he said.

"Eh?" He didn't sound anything like her.

"No, no, I mean Tommy Lee Jones."

Again, I stared blankly.

"Him that does Oops TV."

That'll be Justin Lee Collins, then.

Oh, I'm with you
I take pride in not knowing about "celebrities".

I do know who Jamie Lee Curtis is.
I think I have heard the name Tommy Lee Jones - although I don't know who he is.
I have never heard of Justin Lee Collins.

For me to take an interest in a celebrity, they have to be REALLY talented in their field - and I have to have taken an active interest in their field. Other than that, I have of course heard of the "household" names... people who are so famous that they make the front pages of *proper* newspapers.

I remember a few years ago reading headlines (in a tabloid) about "Rio" something. I can't remember the context, but I thought it was an odd way to talk about Rio De Janeiro. It turns out they were talking about a bloke called Rio Ferdinand. Apparently he plays football or something. But the paper obviously thought he was famous enough to just use his first name. They were incorrect.

I agree with you here
Although I have a bizarre ability to remember the names/ages/shoe sizes of film and pop stars, I don't consider this knowledge a vital part of civilization. I'll get laughed at in a pub for not knowing who Fabio Capello is (I had to wiki that...) because everyone knows that, right? If I ask the person laughing at me to name the author of the Divine Comedy, what's the bet they'll be able to tell me? And who, in the great scheme of human history, is the more important Italian?

The Divine Comedy
I suspect that your average man in the street would either not know, or think they were clever for 'knowing' that it was Neil Hannon!
